Discipline in trading is not about willpower; it is about whether your trades follow the rules you wrote when you were calm. That makes it measurable. Tag every trade where a rule was broken, and the share of trades without a tag is your discipline rate.

Formula

discipline rate = trades with no mistake tag / all trades

Example

60 trades this month, 9 of them carry at least one mistake tag (two moved stops, three FOMO entries, four oversized). Discipline rate: 51 / 60 = 85%.

Reading it

  • The level. Under 70%, the strategy's statistics describe your mistakes as much as your edge. Above 90% is a well-run month.
  • The trend. A discipline rate drawn as a rolling share of the last ten trades, next to the equity curve, shows when rule-breaking starts. In many journals it falls a few trades before every drawdown, not after.
  • The cost. The net result of tagged trades against clean ones is the mistake cost. That number is the case for improving discipline.

Improving it

  1. Write rules down in a playbook and a pre-trade checklist.
  2. Tag honestly, including on winning trades. A winning FOMO trade is still a broken rule.
  3. Pick the most expensive tag each month and work only on that one.
  4. Add hard limits for the moments when discipline is weakest: a daily loss limit, a maximum number of trades.

In SetupBook

The discipline rate is a card on the dashboard ("Discipline", with the count of clean trades) and one of the six components of the trader score, with a weight of 15%. The "Discipline and equity" card in Analytics draws the rolling share of clean trades over the last ten trades and the share of checklist items ticked under the equity curve, with every tagged trade marked in red.
